(Henry Cavill and Amy Adams taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge during a break from filming on set of the Man of Steel Sequel.)
If you have been away holidaying in the far reaches of the Universe, you could not have failed to notice the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. A good cause that has raised at the time of writing a near staggering $100 Million Dollars. Apparently that leaves the ALS Association with a tricky problem – How to spend it all. We should all be so fortunate to have that kind of problem.
On the subject of problems, are we more narcissistic than ever before? The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge indicates we probably are with some of the self-gratification that was going on but who am I to judge anyone? It was for a good cause and a little self-promotion never did anyone any harm.
Apparently the word ‘Selfie’ was awarded Word of the Year by The Oxford Dictionary. It seems capturing an image of one’s self – once the area of such luminaries as Van Gogh of other despondent artists, has become an international pastime. Even politicians rode the trend at memorial services. The Miley Cyrus and Kim Kardashians of the celebrity world have more followers than the population of an average country.
Society internationally demands even the people doing the most menial of jobs have to ‘sell themselves’ in order to obtain employment. So it should come as no surprise that narcissism reigns supreme across the globe. And when you factor Social Media into the equation, need I say more?
It was somewhat shocking to read Fifi Trixibelle Geldof’s account of her suffering from Clinical Depression since the age of Eleven. People are often judgemental and very often don’t understand the condition and how the illness affects the person suffering from it. Like Fifi Trixibelle, I have written about my experience in light of the news about Robin William’s suicide. If more people opened up and discussed the issues surrounding Depression, people would be far more understanding, more accommodating and a lot less judgemental. Many thanks Fifi Trixibelle for opening up and letting the world know about your experience.
It is just not ‘British’ to haggle or talk about money. While it is not something many Brits would dream of doing at home, more than sixty percent of British holidaymakers are prepared to try out their barter skills abroad. While a third of people said they felt nervous, this didn’t stop them bagging a bargain. Some even chose their holiday destination based on where they could get the most reductions. Personally, I bargain rather than haggle. I got a slight reduction on the purchase of a new laptop computer earlier this month, only because I told the sales person I wasn’t prepared to pay anymore, as I was on a budget. I got my laptop at the price I was prepared to pay. That said, more of us Brits should bargain more at home. That would change the face of retail shopping for the better.
On a lighter note to round things up, I am pleased to announce the wedding of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The Couple got married in a private ceremony at their home, the Chateau Miraval in France. From Mr. and Mrs. Smith to Mr. and Mrs. Pitt. Wonderful. Wish them all the best.
There is plenty more to see, read, and watch domestically and internationally throughout this edition of Digital World Wired.
